Richard looking for a Gator

Braden River has a lot of Turtles

Anhinga
This bird looks a lot like the Double-crested Cormorant. This is a diving bird and is also called a Snakebird due to its habit of appearing like a snake-surfacing from below the water with its long neck showing. It spears fish with its long sharp bill. They sit often with wings spread as seen as their feathers get waterlogged. The hot sun helps dry them out.

Turkey Vulture
Non-migrator in Florida. This bird is mostly mute, making only grunts and groans. Closely related to storks. Eats dead and decaying flesh. Probably why it grunts and groans.

Common Moorhen
Eats insects, snails, and seeds. Also called a Mud Hen. A duck like bird. Seen in freshwater marshes and lakes. The young usually leaves the nest within a few hours after hatching. It does stay in the area of the family for months. The young like riding on the backs of adults. Would like to get a picture of this.
Limpkin
If you want to see birds go to Jig's Landing. The Limpkin birds call was used in Tarzan films for jungle sound effects. Mostly heard than seen. This is the first Limpkin I have ever seen. They eat snails, frogs, and lizards.

Richard, Mat, Alison, and I, had a good day Kayaking. Two small Gators together but no pictures. Brady our Standard Poodle stayed home too many Gators here.

Kayaking From City Pier to Bean Point Anna Maria FL August 7, 2009

City Pier is located on Anna Maria Island Florida.
100 S. Bay Blvd
Anna Maria, Florida
941-779-1667
City Pier was originally built in 1911 by Will Bean. I visit the City Pier often, as do tourists and avid fishermen. Eat at the senic Restaurant at the end of the pier. View the Skyway Bridge, St. Petersburg, Egmont Key, Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. You may see Manatees, Dolphins, and a large variety of Tropical Birds.
